The surface is made of soft silicone and feels like a bulging sphere when a person steps on it. The surface sinks under the load, so the change in value can also be felt underfoot. People with different weights create depressions of different depths. The base is stamped metal, and a G-shaped manganese steel sensor measures changes as small as 50 grams. The scale measures 300 by 300 by 80 millimetres.
